What is the energy price cap?
The energy price cap in the UK is a limit set by the government’s energy regulator, Ofgem, on the maximum amount an energy supplier can charge per unit of electricity and gas. The price cap was introduced to protect consumers from excessive energy prices. At the moment, the price cap is set at £1,834 – valid until December 2023.
When will energy prices go down?
The current energy price cap is down by 7% compared to the previous quarter. However, the prediction for January 2024 is a 4% increase, followed by a 4% decrease in April at £1,820/year. This would make the current energy prices stable for the foreseeable future, which makes switching energy suppliers ideal during this time.

1. Watch out for exit fees
Not all tariffs have them, but it’s worth checking. Exiting a fixed deal after the cooling-off period might mean shelling out some extra cash.
2. Consider the length of the deal
Most fixed tariffs last for either 12 or 24 months. Since the price cap could change during this time, think about how long you want to commit to a particular rate.
3. Stay informed
Keep an eye on the market and compare deals regularly. Signing up for alerts can help you stay in the loop and snag those sweet deals when they pop up.
4. Don’t bite off more than you can chew
Make sure the deal you choose fits your budget. Rushing into something you can’t afford isn’t worth the hassle.
5. Look beyond the direct debit amount
While it’s important, don’t forget to check the unit rate and standing charge to get a clear picture of your energy costs.
